Animation Based on Playtime (1967) by Jacques Tati, 2023

"Playtime" by Tati brilliantly satirized modern society, and to capture its essence, we carefully selected two pivotal scenes—the apartment and restaurant scenes—to construct our narrative. Our choice of camera angles was deliberate; it allowed us to position the viewer as an external observer, separated from the action by a glass wall. This separation reminded us of the dynamics in a zoo, where human visitors watch animals in captivity. Inspired by this contrast, we decided to transform the movie's characters into monkeys. Monkeys offer a compelling vehicle to depict the intricacies of modern society. They symbolize the absurdity, unpredictability, and often comical nature of our interactions with technology, urban life, and social conventions. Just as Tati ridiculed modern society in "Playtime," we believe that our approach serves as a clever and humorous means of continuing this tradition of social critique and mockery.
